Orientation visit to AIMS KOCHI


The social work trainees started their orientation visit to AIMS, Kochi on 21/08/2013 at 6.00 am. Amrita Institute of Medical Science or AIMS, a 1200 bed super-speciality hospital in Cochin, Kerala is a result of Amma’s desire to provide outstanding and affordable medical care to all regardless of one’s ability to pay. And now Amrita, one of Asia’s premier medical hospitals is a world – class institution of medicine, academics, and research where medical aid is provided to patients from all parts of India and the world. Ron Gottsegen is the Executive Director and Dr. Prem Nair is the Medical Director of AIMS.

The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (AIMS) is an ISO 9001: 2008 certified and NABH, NABL, NACC- “A” grade accredited private medical college inaugurated on May 17, 1998 by then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee in presence of Mata Amritanandamayi, the founder of AIMS. . This massive healthcare infrastructure with over 3,330,000 sq. ft of built-up area spread over 125 acres of land, supports a daily patient volume of about 3000 outpatients and 900 in patients. There at AIMS, they consider patient as the deity and workers as worshipers.


By imparting all these informations, Ms. Remya (HR officer) handed over her duty to Ms. Shiny (SW co-ordinator, AIMS) to have a talk on the Importance/Role of medical social worker in AIMS. The Medical Social work dept of AIMS started its functioning with a number of 5 social workers on January 1, 2001. At present it has a strength of 40 numbers of SWs and among them 25 SWs are directly under Medical Social Work dept. The service they provided has covered over 20 medical depts with a feeling of genuine smile, compassionate look, casing words and soothing touch. The dept of Medical social work has duel HODship were Sanjeev Singh is the supreme, under him comes the Functional HOD, SW co-ordinator, Senior SW and SW trainees.

Later after that session all the orientation visit trainees got divided into 12 groups consisting 3 members each to understand the vital and various role a social worker could play on those depts. Every group had a medical social worker (AIMS) to guide them and to install them the specialities of that particular dept they deal with and it was an awesome experience for the trainees to bag knowledge and scopes of social work field. The 12 group were send to depts. like: MICU, Oncology, Nephrology,
Pulmonology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal surgery, Gynaecology, Neurology, Gastro medicine, Stroke medicine, Neuro surgery and Blood bank.


These groups took almost 1 hour for observing and understanding the functioning of their assigned depts. By 1 pm all the trainees, teachers and AIMS SWs got satdown for an open discussion on what they observed and grabbed from there. One from each groups presented and shared their experience and ideas they got from their depts, likewise all 12 groups indulged in an effective discussion and by 1.30 pm the session got dispersed.
