The Staff and Students of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam and Volunteers of Yuva Dharma Dhara, the youth wing of Matha Amrithandamayi Math observed International women’s day on 8/3/12. A huge human chain was formed from Karunagapally to Vavakavu of about 2kms by students, staffs and inmates of Math. This human chain will represent oneness of women all over the world. Students with banners and slogans to stop the atrocities against women lined up as a chain in the road from Karunagapally to Vavakavu. Arjuna Award winner S. Omanakumari delivered the inaugural address. Karunagapally Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr. Jayakrishnan delivered the presidential address on the occasion. Felicitation was given by Karunagapally Panchayath Vice chairperson. Ms. Aswathy Radhakrishanan (Asst. Professor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham) welcomed the gathering. Br.Sudeep (Director, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam ), Dr Balakrishnan Shankar (Asst. Dean, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam ), Dr Bibin Nair, Dean, Amrita school of Biotechnology), Dr Somanath(Chairman, Amrita School of Business), Dr K Shankaran(Principal, Amrita School of Engineering), Dr Vishwanathan(Professor, Amrita School of Arts and Science) attended the function. Two street plays from students of MSW and MBA were performed on the same day. The theme of the street play of MBA students was based on female foeticide.
The MSW students performed Street play based on the UN theme for the year-2013 “Promise is a promise- stop the violence against women”. The script and direction of the street play was done by Mr. V S Kochukrishna Kurup (Faculty-Department of Social Work). A team of eleven members were selected and the orientation on the street play was given by Mr. V S Kochukrishna Kurup and Mr. Ranjith Kavumkara (Lecturers, Dept. of Social Work, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam).
The theme of the street play was simple and informative, so that it can be understood by any one. The theme of the play projected on the current issues like Delhi Rape case and the failure of our law and order system in recognizing and punishing the culprits. The street play reinforced the idea that women should take their safety in their own hands and defend themselves whenever needed.
The team members of street play are Anas, Bibin, Joby, Midhun, Praveen, Sreejith, Athira, Arya, Jessica, Supriya, and Winnie (S-2 MSW). Dr Renjith R Pillai (HOD) and Ms. Veena Suresh, Mr. Nishant M, Br Vivek Subramaniyam (faculties ) were always there with the team ensuring their full support. The team performed street play at Karunagapally and Y. M. M Central School, Puthiyakavu. The street play at Karunagapally was performed in street itself. People from all walks of life who passed nearly found stand still for few minutes. The officials and students of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam appreciated the efforts taken by the students and faculties. After the play at Karunagapally team moved to Y. M. M central school, Puthiyakavu and performed the play before the school children and their parents.
