CONCLUSION OF THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PSYCHOSOCIAL CARE IN DISASTER, LIFE SKILLS EDUCATION AND COUNSELING

The one week long workshop with around 47 participants from across the country concluded on 10th November, 2012 with the faculty evaluation session of the programme. The valedictory function was inaugurated by Dr. G Gopinathan Pillai (Principal, Amrita School of Arts and Science). Mr. Ranjith. K (faculty, Department of Social Work) welcomed the gathering. Dr. Priya K.R (Professor, Amrita Department of Social Work, Ettimadai campus) presided over the function. Mr. Rajeev M.M (Vice Chair person, Amrita Department of Social Work), Mr. V.S Kochukrishna Kurup and Ms. Shobitha Santhakumari (NIMHANS, Bangalore) gave the felicitations. It was followed by the vote of thanks by Dr. Renjith R Pillai (Chairperson, Department of Social Work). Certificates were distributed to all the participants by Dr. G Gopinathan Pillai (Principal, Amrita School of Arts and Science).

Dr. Sekar (NIMHANS, Bangalore) handled sessions on Psychosocial Care in Disaster. The sessions on Life skills education was coordinated by Dr. Renjith R Pillai (Chair person, Amrita Department of Social Work, Mr. Ranjith K (faculty, Department of Social Work) and Mr. V.S KochuKrishna Kurup (faculty, Department of Social Work).  Theoretical and practical lessons on counseling was dealt by Ms.Shobitha Santhakumari (NIMHANS, Bangalore).

The sessions included interactive sessions and discussions along with a lot of games and activities. Under Psychosocial Care (PSC) in Disaster, the concept and types of disaster, its various impacts, the psychological effects of disaster, its various manifestations and the method of intervention through the seven methods of PSC were discussed.

The sessions on life skills focused on the importance of imbibing the essential skills that are required to lead a happy and successful life and also to tackle the hurdles that one may come across. The ten life skills specified by WHO are – Self awareness, Empathy, Problem solving, Decision making, Effective communication, Interpersonal skills, Critical thinking, Creative thinking, Coping with emotions and Coping with stress. Activities were done in order to try to assimilate the specified skills in the participants.

The next session was on counseling. It dealt with the attributes that are required for a counselor, its different stages, techniques, the relevance of good interviewing techniques and also the different theories and approaches that are followed in counseling. It was followed by role plays and activities to make the participants get acquainted with the practice of counseling.

  1. Congratulations to all.. a small suggestion, next time when workshops like this is been arranged can it be made possible that the interested alumni’s also can participate.
