Leadership Training Programme for Coconut Producers Society (CPSs) is an attempt to revolutionize the Coconut Producer’s Society with the mutual support and organization of Department of Social Work and Coconut Development Board (Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India).
Coconut Development Board (CDB) is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India for the integrated development of coconut cultivation and industry in the country with focus on productivity increase and product diversification. The Board has initiated the formation of Coconut Producer Societies (CPS) by associating 40-100 coconut growers in a contiguous area with a consolidated minimum of 4000-5000 palms. The objective is socio economic upliftment of the farmers through productivity improvement, cost reduction, efficient collective marketing and processing and product diversification.
Leadership programme is an attempt to meet these objectives. Five training programmes were already conducted under this joint approach from 6th September to 31st November, 2012. Training session mainly focused on introduction to vision and objective of CPSs which was mostly handled by Mr. Jayakumar (Technical officer, Coconut Development Board). Leadership training sessions, yoga sessions, project planning sessions and sessions on entrepreneurship, documentation, value addition and accounting were also conducted at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus, Kollam. A trip was organized to CPCRI (Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kayamkulam) and the trainees also interacted with several coconut farmers in the area. All the trainees were awarded certificates at the end of the programme.
